What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a prosthetic restorative device that is used to replace a missing or lost tooth. It is a fixed prosthetic that can only be removed by the dentist once it is fitted into place.
Dental crowns are used to fix badly decayed and damaged teeth. They are also fitted on top of your tooth after a root canal procedure to lend it strength and stability. Crowns are also placed on top of dental implants or used to hold a traditional or cantilever dental bridge in place. Some crowns can be made to lengthen very short teeth in the mouth.
Once in place, a crown can improve the appearance of your tooth, give it added strength, and prevent it from being damaged further.
Types of Materials Crowns are Made From
Crowns that are created in dental labs are manufactured in a variety of materials. Some of the most common types of crowns include gold or all-metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crown, porcelain crowns, all-resin crowns, and stainless steel crowns.

Crowns made from metal are usually gold, platinum or some base-metal alloys. These are the strongest type of crowns. Gold crowns are particularly durable and can last for decades with proper care. They are also hypoallergenic and do not require too much of the healthy tooth structure to be eroded. Base-metal crowns are also a good alternative, though some people may be allergic to certain metals like nickel.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns have a natural-looking appearance because of the tooth-colored porcelain that encases the underlying metal of the prosthetic. These crowns can also last for over 15 years, though the porcelain material is not as strong as metal and can be chipped off.

All-ceramic crowns are the most natural-looking of all crowns and are quite resistant to stains. However, just like PFM, they can fracture or get chipped. However, with proper care, they can last for over 10 years.

All-resin crowns are quite natural-looking and are also very inexpensive, though they are prone to much greater wear and tear than other crowns. As a result, they may last you for about 7 years.

Stainless steel crowns are usually used to protect primary teeth in children from wear and tear. These crowns fall off with the baby tooth. In adults, stainless steel alternatives can be used as temporary crowns while they are waiting for their permanent crown to be fabricated. |
How Should You Care for your Crown?
Crowns do not require any special care besides your regular oral health regimen, which includes brushing, flossing, using mouthwash, and showing up for your dental checkup appointments.
While you are wearing a temporary crown, you should avoid chewing from that side of the mouth and steer clear of hard or sticky food that can dislodge your crown.
When flossing your teeth, take care to slide out the threader rather than lift it off to avoid jolting the temporary crown.
Once you have your permanent crown, you can resume eating from both sides of the mouth and enjoy all your favorite food. Take care, however, of not letting plaque accumulate as it can re-infect the tooth and result in dental crown failure.
