What is Dentistry for Kids

Dentistry for kids or pediatric dentistry requires 2 to 3 years of training particularly on dealing with the specific behavioral traits of children. This includes how to make them less anxious during a check-up, and acclimatize them to following dental visits.

What to Expect During Your Child’s First Dental Visit

The ADA recommends your child’s first visit to the dentist should be when he or she is one year old. Here are some of the things that you will learn to help take care of your kid’s oral health.

At Reich Dental Center – Roswell, we recommend you start taking care of your child’s oral health from the day of birth. Keep your baby’s mouth clean by gently rubbing their gums with a soft damp cloth. When you see signs of the first teeth developing, we recommend you use a child-size, soft-bristled brush to clean them. We will teach you how to brush your child’s teeth in these initial years.

A baby’s first tooth will erupt between 6 to 12 months of age. By the time your children turn 3, they will have developed all 20 of their primary teeth. During this time, sore, tender, and irritable gums pose a challenge for your child. Rubbing the sore gums gently with your finger, using a wet cloth or a cold spoon can help relieve the discomfort. A teething ring can help too.

How to Prevent Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

You can minimize the risk of tooth decay from baby bottles by not bottle-feeding sleeping infants and toddlers. Those children who need bottles to fall asleep should be given ones filled with water. While your baby is growing their teeth, it is important that you take care to notice any signs of baby bottle decay. You should examine their teeth, especially the back surface, for any irregular dull spots that may appear whiter than their normal tooth surface.

A bottle left in a baby’s mouth can cause tooth decay since the sugar from the milk and the bacteria in the plaque forms an acid that destroys the enamel. While your child is awake, saliva production is high and it carries away the liquid. While sleeping, the saliva flow is low and the liquid pools around the baby’s teeth for longer, increasing the risk of decay.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Your child’s first dental visit should be performed once your child turns one. It is vital that the child’s first visit be as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. A pleasant environment creates trust and helps the child become comfortable during future visits.

If your child is old enough to understand speech, we will speak to them directly and let them know in child-friendly and fun terms what the visit will involve. They will also be encouraged to ask as many questions as possible.

At Reich Dental Center – Roswell, we will document your child’s medical and dental history, perform a comprehensive oral exam, and discuss our findings with you. We will also review the importance of maintaining your child’s dental health and dietary habits to ensure your child has a healthy and bright smile for life.
